Shipping once a month and shipping five times a day are not the same task at different speeds: they are opposite ways of spreading risk. In the first, every release is bulky and daunting, so it slips, and slipping makes it bulkier. A low cadence feeds itself.
Coverage percentage is a rigged target
You can reach eighty percent without ever confirming that somebody can pay. The number rewards covering the easy parts, which happen to be the parts that break least. We would rather ask which journeys are covered end to end, even if the answer looks worse on a slide.
A forty-minute pipeline ends up unused
Past a certain waiting threshold, people stop running the suite before proposing anything and start piling up work to avoid waiting twice. Running time is not an infrastructure detail: it governs how the team behaves. Ours takes twenty-two seconds and gets run at all hours.
