How we work in Lisbon
The first thing to give way is almost never the web server
When traffic multiplies, the part that gives way first is usually the database. A query that takes forty milliseconds with twenty concurrent visitors takes several seconds with two thousand, and requests pile up waiting their turn while the web server sits idle. That is why we look there before looking at the size of the machine.
Scaling the web and scaling the data are two different jobs
The web layer multiplies: if it holds no state, you add machines behind a load balancer and the problem disappears in minutes. The data does not — there is one database and it does not duplicate at the press of a button. Reads can be spread across replicas and heavy work moved out of the request, but that is decided in advance, not on the morning of the spike.
The ceiling is set when the query is written, not when the server is hired
A page that fires one query per row of a list runs beautifully on the laptop of whoever wrote it and buckles in production under real load. It is the most repeated fault we find when reviewing other people's projects. In Laravel it is fixed in hours; paying for twice the machine to hide it is a bill every month and it does not fix the cause.
Euros on both sides, and an intra-EU invoice
Portugal is in the European Union and uses the euro. With your intra-community VAT number the invoice goes out under the reverse charge, with no currency conversion in between, and hosting can stay on European servers with no international transfer to document. Your own accountants confirm the exact treatment.
