Both operating systems let you choose it in the settings, and an app that ignores that preference shows the person a day they do not recognise. Respecting it costs little if decided early; adding it later means going through every screen with a date on it, and there are more of those than anyone remembers.
The picker is where the value gets lost
A date wheel built by hand for one calendar forces a mental conversion before you touch it, and every mental conversion is a possible error. It pays to use the system picker, which already has the other one solved, and to always store the same value underneath.
A scheduled notification is resolved on the day it fires
«Remind me in a month» stored as a fixed timestamp stops making sense the moment the reference moves. We store the rule rather than the result, and the alert is worked out as it fires, which is when the device already knows what day it is.
The loaded calendar travels with the app and refreshes
With no coverage the app still has to calculate deadlines, so the table is kept on the device along with a mark of when it was downloaded. If that copy gets old, the app says so on screen instead of trusting a calculation made with stale data.
