The assumption lives in six places, not one
The database column, the form validation, the confirmation email, the generated document, the export to accounting and the carrier integration. Fixing one and leaving the rest does not remove the problem: it moves it somewhere it takes longer to show.
Buying address checking or writing it
An external address verification service is paid per lookup and earns its keep when packages come back or you charge by zone. If you only collect contacts, your own rules do the same job without adding another dependency. The math is boring and it is done with your numbers.
Deciding how far you go is part of the work
Not every system has to accept addresses from anywhere. Sometimes the sensible answer is to support two countries properly and turn the rest away with a clear message. Widening the scope just in case multiplies the edge cases somebody will maintain for years, often unused.
