How we work in Brussels
The questions come before the screens
Before anything is designed, we write down the three or four things this version has to answer, and the events to record follow from that. The other way round does not work: instrumenting afterwards means guessing what you wanted to know, and it almost always turns out the deciding figure was the missing one.
Inside an account there is continuity
On an open website there is no recognising the same person across visits. Inside a product with sign-up there is: an account, a session of your own and an explicit relationship with whoever uses it. That makes real retention measurable without depending on third-party identifiers.
Built to carry on, not to throw away
Laravel, React and React Native, with the database designed for the real product from the outset. A throwaway prototype forces you to redo the instrumentation as well, and then the pilot's figures and the product's cannot be compared. That break costs more than it looks.
With few users, the numbers say nothing
With forty people using the product no dashboard says anything conclusive, and it is worth knowing that before you look at one. There the data is for deciding who to call: who came in and left, who came back and who stopped halfway. You have the conversation; the analytics only pick who to start with.
