Testing a spike costs money, and that is why almost nobody tests one
A serious load test needs an environment close to production, generated traffic that resembles the real thing, and several days of tuning. You pay for infrastructure used only on those days and for hours of work that, if all goes well, leave nothing visible behind. It is spending with no result to show, and so it is always postponed. We are not going to tell you it is cheap.
What can be known without paying for that test
Rather more than it seems. Reviewing the slow queries your own system already logs, looking at how long each page takes under the real traffic of an ordinary Tuesday, and working out by hand what happens if you multiply that by ten usually points at the same bottleneck the full test would find. It costs a fraction and in most cases it is enough.
When it is worth paying for
When there is a committed date, an expected volume well above the usual, and a failure that day carries a cost you can write down in euros. At that point the test stops being a luxury and becomes cheap insurance against what is at stake. Outside that case we say it is not needed, even if that means one job less.
The first decision is not technical: how much can you afford to lose
Before sizing anything you have to answer how much downtime is tolerable, how much slowness is acceptable, and which part of the service cannot fail under any circumstances. Those are business decisions and you make them, not your supplier. Without that number up front, any infrastructure proposal is an opinion with an invoice attached.
