You split when the vocabulary changes, not the spelling
Four different letters do not hold up two versions. What does hold them up is business words that mean different things on each side and a sentence that gets read backwards. That is the real threshold; short of it, one well-chosen version.
An “-ize” ending proves nothing
Part of British English uses that ending as house style, so finding it proves nothing about a text being American. An audit built on that single trait returns false positives and hands you confidence you have not earned. The pairs that really separate are other ones.
