How we work in Rotterdam
A read-only first phase
A version that reads from the existing system and never writes to it can go live without risk to the business and without negotiating write permissions with anyone. It validates half the assumptions and, if it is dropped, leaves no trace to clean up. Writing comes in the second phase, with confidence already earned.
It gets tested with real data, not with examples
Made-up data is clean and that is why it is useless: it has no name typed in capitals, no 2014 order with no delivery date, no field that is there sometimes and missing others. We work on a copy of yours with anything identifying masked. Almost every failure shows up right there.
The new product must not become a second source of truth
The risk in these projects is not that they fail: it is that they half work and create a parallel copy of the data that nobody knows whether to trust. It is avoided from day one by writing down what the product stores on its own and what it always asks the source system for.
Whoever administers the old system joins on day one
A permission, a read-only user or a field that needs adding can stall a whole week, and none of it depends on us. Whether it is your own IT person or the software vendor, they have to be warned before we start. MVPs that get stuck almost always get stuck exactly there.
