The size of what has to be tapped
Each platform’s guidelines set a minimum for touch targets, forty-four points on iOS and forty-eight on Android. Below that, a button fails for anyone on a bus, with cold hands or an unsteady grip. That is not a rare case: it is most of us half the time.
If the user enlarges the text, the screen has to cope
Somebody who has raised the system font size did not do it on a whim. An app with fixed heights breaks precisely there: text overlaps, the bottom button falls off, the row gets cut. We test it with the setting at maximum before delivery, which is when it shows, rather than when a review says so.
Every gesture needs an alternative route
Swipe to delete, long press to open a menu, pinch to zoom. Somebody navigating with VoiceOver or TalkBack does not perform those gestures the same way, and somebody using one hand often does not perform them at all. Each gesture carries a visible equivalent: a button, a menu option, something you can find without knowing it exists.
React Native does not arrive with accessibility built in
A native control comes with its role and its state already declared; the same control rebuilt in React Native does not, and you have to tell it explicitly what it is and what it announces. It is small work and you have to remember to do it. On Arrels 360, for technicians standing outdoors in gloves and full sun, it decided whether the app worked at all.
