We walk the schema and produce the list of columns holding a measurement, with its unit, its precision and where each value comes from. It usually fits in a spreadsheet, and it's usually the deliverable that closes arguments that had been open for months.
Two systems that disagree and neither is broken
The warehouse says one weight, the website says another, and both are right: one weighs the product and the other the package with its box. Before touching a line of code the definition has to be settled, because coding on top of an ambiguous definition only moves the problem.
A stated tolerance prevents a thousand arguments
When two systems have to agree after a conversion, someone has to decide what difference is acceptable and where it gets checked. Without that number written down, every gram of drift looks serious and every serious bug gets waved off as rounding. With it, an alert means something again.
The assumptions that aren't written down anywhere
The default unit on a form, the paper size a generated document comes out in, whether a degree is a value or a difference. These are decisions somebody made one afternoon and told nobody about. Listing them and writing them down is half the work.
